A coastal weather warning has been issued for Whatcom County by the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office (WCSO).

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a gale warning from 8:15 a.m. today (Wednesday, December 11) to 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 12.

"Winds should build through this afternoon, shifting from the east to the southeast and building to sustained winds of 25 to 30 knots with gusts up to 45 knots, peaking between 3 and 9 p.m.," said WCSO's press release.  "Because this is a southeast wind event, the coastal areas of Whatcom County that should have the strongest winds include Lummi Island, the Lummi peninsula, Sandy Point, Cherry Point, Drayton Harbor and Point Roberts."

The press release continued: "A gale warning means that winds of 34 to 47 knots are imminent or occurring. Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires experience and properly equipped vessels. It is highly recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe harbor prior to the onset of gale conditions. "

WCSO said that coastal communities in Whatcom County should not see tidal effects from this event, as the winds are southeasterly. "The high tides including storm surge should not exceed 9.25 feet," said the release. "Drivers and persons on the beach should always be cautious along low lying coastal roads and beaches particularly in the Birch Bay, Blaine, Sandy Point, Lummi Island and Point Roberts areas."
