Blaine senior McCormick bound for state cross country meet

Blaine senior Taylee McCormick will fulfill her years-long goal of running in the state cross country meet this Saturday, November 9, at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

At the qualifying meet, the Northwest District Championships on November 2, McCormick placed 26th out of 82 runners in 21 minutes and 23.4 seconds, her best time on the notoriously hilly course.

Though McCormick just made the cut for state – the top 28 at South Whidbey qualified – Blaine head coach Gabe Bolton said she could do well in Pasco.

“Even though it seems like we’re bottom qualifiers, our conference is faster than a lot of others,” he said. “My goal is for her to finish in the top half.”

McCormick has seen the course before. She walked it last year when she tagged along to the meet with sophomore Elee Faulkner. Faulkner ran well this season but missed the final few meets, including the state qualifier, due to an injury.

For the rest of Blaine’s cross country runners, last weekend’s meet at South Whidbey marked the end of the season.

“It’s been a good season. The kids were a joy to work,” Bolton said. “I’m excited for Taylee and this weekend.”
