Sliders, soccer and a splash: Borderite Block Party returns to Blaine

The Blaine School District is kicking off the school year with the Borderite Block Party at Borderite Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 20, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.

This will be the second back-to-school block party hosted by the district, in partnership with the Peace Arch Education Foundation and Blaine-Birch Bay Park and Recreation District 2.

A variety of community organizations will table at the event, each offering something different for attendees.

Blaine High School culinary arts students will prepare and serve sliders for free, with a vegan option available.

The cheerleading team will set up kids activities in the stadium, such as soccer drills led by the high school boys and girls soccer coaches, cornhole and giant Jenga.

There will also be a bounce house, face painting and a raffle, with the main prize being an Ooni pizza oven. All those who attend will get a free raffle ticket.

The dunk tank will make its return, giving event-goers the chance to dunk Superintendent Dan Chaplik, Blaine Police Department Deputy Chief Brent Greene and some teachers in the district.

Bellingham-based pop artist Veronica North, who grew up in Point Roberts and graduated from Blaine High School, will perform near the end of the event.

“We’re pretty excited to have her, because she’s building a name for herself,” said Julie Butschli, the district’s Family Service Center coordinator.

The event is free to attend and is open to all, including people without children in the district.

“I think we’re all still kind of recovering from COVID and limitations and all that, and so we’re really working to build community, and I think our school’s the hub of that,” Butschli said.
