By Stefanie Donahue Whatcom County sheriff deputies arrested Kurt Ebe, 60, following an incident at his home located on the 2300 block of Birch Bay–Lynden Road on July 16. According to police, the suspect doused a woman and her tent with gasoline after a dispute over a stolen rug.

Authorities responded to the scene at about 11:30 p.m. after the woman fled the scene in her car.

According to reports, the suspect accused the woman of stealing the rug from his home while she was residing on his property in a tent. The rug had sentimental value, he said.

Ebe allegedly lit a cigarette above the gasoline-soaked tent prior to putting it out and walking inside his home, according to reports.

The woman fled the scene and contacted authorities shortly after. SWAT deputies arrived on scene and arrested Ebe.

Ebe was charged with assault in the first degree. Whatcom County Superior Court set a $250,000 bail on July 18.
