A 34-year-old Point Roberts man was booked into Whatcom County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail after allegedly making a bomb threat and smashing several windows on Feb. 21 at the U.S. port of entry in Point Roberts.
Brandon Brandreth-Gibbs, 34, of Point Roberts, arrived with an ax at the U.S./Canada border crossing around 1:30 a.m. Feb. 21 and began breaking windows of a government vehicle and a window in the port building, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office. He then allegedly threatened to return and bomb the port of entry with his truck.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to Point Roberts and found Brandreth-Gibbs after he returned to the border crossing. Deputies arrested Brandreth-Gibbs and transported him by boat to the mainland, where he was taken into jail about 6:20 a.m.
Brandreth-Gibbs was booked on preliminary charges of bomb threat, first-degree burglary, three counts of felony harassment and first-degree malicious mischief, according to the sheriff’s office.
During his preliminary appearance on Feb. 23, Whatcom County Superior Court Court Commissioner Ann Vetter-Hansen requested Brandreth-Gibbs undergo a competency evaluation at Western State Hospital. His competency hearing is tentatively scheduled at 8:30 a.m. March 5 in front of Judge Robert E. Olson, according to court records.
Brandreth-Gibbs has a history of threatening and harassing U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers in Point Roberts, according to a 2019 Bellingham Herald article. He was arrested in 2019 for allegedly assaulting and harassing officers, according to the article, though superior court records show those charges were later dismissed.
