The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate a shooting between two motorcycle gangs in which one person was hurt on Sunday night in Birch Bay.
The shooting occurred about 7:15 p.m. in the 7800 block of Birch Bay Drive, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The person who was hurt sustained injuries that were non-life threatening.
It wasn’t immediately known whether the person who was hurt was a member of the motorcycle gangs.
Eyewitnesses said one person was shot in the leg and a biker took him to the hospital before law enforcement came. Blaine Police were called in and helped apprehend one of the suspects. Photos taken on Sunday night showed crime scene tape and bullet casings on the sidewalk in front of Bay Breeze Restaurant and Bar.
Authorities took several people into custody, although no information was available about them as of Monday.
The Whatcom County Jail log showed two men — one 31 years old, the other 54 years old — who were arrested on Sunday by the Sheriff’s Office under the same incident number. The younger man faces allegations of drive-by shooting and giving a false statement to law enforcement while the older man was arrested on suspicion of assault in the first degree and reckless endangerment, according to jail records.
They remained in jail Monday morning.
The Sheriff’s Office said on Sunday there was no known threat to the public based on available information.
Authorities are asking people to avoid the immediate area as the investigation continues.
