North Whatcom Fire and Rescue eyes levy proposal

Posted

After several failed levy lid lift attempts, North Whatcom Fire and Rescue (NWFR) is once again considering putting a ballot measure before voters to help bring essential services to the fire district.

The NWFR Board of Fire Commissioners will hold a workshop to discuss whether the district should go out for a levy lid lift at 9 a.m. Monday, January 5 at Station 61, 9408 Odell Road in Blaine. The workshop is open to the public.

NWFR has struggled in recent years to gain support for a levy lid lift, with the last attempts in August 2024 and twice in 2021. Voters last approved a levy lid lift in 2006.

Fire chief Jason Van Der Veen has said the levy is critical for the district to improve response times, staffing and aging infrastructure.

The district services 33,800 people across 156 square miles, which include Blaine, Birch Bay, Custer, Lynden and Laurel.
