The Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee discussed delayed investment of Transportation Benefit District funds, upcoming committee vacancies and proposed parking restrictions on Gulf Road at its Oct. 15 meeting.
Transportation funds await investment
Member Allison Calder reported that a February request to invest the Point Roberts Transportation Benefit District’s $1.2 million was delayed by a mix-up between Whatcom County Public Works and the treasurer’s office. According to Calder, the delay likely cost the district about $20,000 in interest, based on estimated annual earnings of $40,000 to $50,000.
“We are on track now,” Calder quoted Public Works as saying in a recent email. A resolution authorizing the investment was expected to go before County Council Oct. 27, with approval anticipated Nov. 10. Calder also plans to request quarterly reports on the district’s gas tax revenue so the community can track incoming funds.
Two Advisory Committee seats to open in 2027
Bill Zidel and Brian Hunter will reach the end of their second two-year terms on Jan. 31, 2027, leaving two seats open. Applications will be posted on social media and can be submitted through the Whatcom County Executive’s office.
Jeff Christopher will continue representing the Point Roberts Taxpayers Association on PRCAC for the 2027-29 term.
Advisory Committee recommends Gulf Road parking changes
The Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee voted to recommend amending Whatcom County Code 10.24.030 to allow parking only on the north side of Gulf Road between Tyee Drive and Julius Drive, while permitting parking on both sides west of Julius Drive. The proposed changes are intended to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety while maintaining parking access.
Committee members raised concerns about speeding around the curve near Julius Drive and the danger to pedestrians crossing the road. The recommendation will be sent to Whatcom County for consideration.
