Canadians won’t be taken for granted

Dear editor,

As a Canadian I attended the Sept.11/26 ceremony at the Peace Arch for the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Similar to the weather, it was a marvellous celebration of mutual respect and desire to help. However, there is an aspect of that day which many American news outlets overlooked.

That is, the many planes which were diverted to Canadian airports because they were forbidden to land in the States. The musical play “Come From Away” delightfully portrays what happened in Gander (Newfoundland, Canada) where a plethora of planes landed and nearly 7000 passengers were fed and housed. Although exceptional, at least another dozen airports across Canada were involved.

Why this lack of recognition by the American press? Canadians may be generous but will not be taken for granted.

Many Canadian have lost trust in the “United” States because of Trump. We don't want to be the 51st state and being told how to trade. That's not the America I used to know. I am hopeful that the bond of friendship from 9/11 and demonstrated by the Peace Arch celebration will eventually prevail.

Bring back the lighthouse

Dear editor,

First time writer, long time reader. I usually read from cover to cover and count on The Northern Light for the low

down on what has happened and what will be happening in Birch Bay and Blaine. As a community volunteer I also appreciate your reporters helping us tell our stories.

I read the article about the changes and challenges you are facing and liked being in the loop.

Reading the newspaper is a cherished tradition. My father started each day with coffee and paper and I do the same.

I hope that hard copy newspapers don't disappear and so I appreciate knowing how you need help to keep our wonderful local paper coming to us.

When I went online today I was very happy to see the header hadn't changed. I wish you would bring it back to the hard copy. I miss the blue and the light house.
