The Editor:

I have to commend Pat Grubb and The Northern Light newspaper. The level of continued, dogged investigative journalism Pat has displayed regarding the Port of Bellingham is something you expect to find in venerable publications like the Wall Street Journal, ProPublica, The Atlantic or the New York Times. Bravo to The Northern Light and Pat Grubb!

Sometimes there are moments of unity when titles, party affiliations, individual faiths and reasons “why” fall away. What’s left are people working hand-in-hand.

It’s Bruce, Greg, Tammy, Mary Lou, Alicia and Monte. It’s Sarah and Andrew and their kids showing up with homemade soup. It’s Westside Pizza, IGA, the Blaine Dollar Tree, Nate and the Christ Community Church, Doug and The Bridge, and The Way Cafe.

It’s the many donors and volunteers who rapidly assembled to deliver over 80 hot pizzas, pack more than 100 full lunches, and share holiday treats with flood victims in Everson and Sumas within 24 hours of the event. It’s the guy in the Beach Cat tee who spent his Saturday mucking out the ruined homes of people he’s never met.

It’s people insisting that they’re ready to do it all again, and then still asking how else they can help. These folks are only a fraction of the response, and they’re all around us.

When there’s a problem, community is so often the answer.

The Editor:

As the elected president of our country, Donald Trump speaks for all Americans. When he trashes our allies and praises our enemies, he is speaking for you and for me.

When he calls our fellow citizens garbage (or worse) whose reporting, whose political positions, whose national origins offend him, he is speaking for you and for me.

When the president cuts off food and medicine to people in third world nations whose lives depend on it, he is doing it on our behalf.

Donald Trump is the face of the U.S. and its citizens to all the world. This is a short list of the horrible things he is doing in your name and in my name, at home and abroad. I am ashamed.
