Letters to Editor: Sept. 10-16, 2026

The Editor:
Recently, an acquaintance  told me she had accepted my Facebook invitation, but did I know she didn’t agree with my conservative views?  I was taken aback as to why that needed to be said.

I told her I have many liberal friends. I value them for who they are — their kindness, friendship, character and love for our community. We simply know that politics is a subject we don’t discuss. Not because we don’t have opinions, but because our friendships are too important to risk losing over volatile political rhetoric.

We won’t always agree politically, or even on community issues. But does disagreement have to become division?

Our neighbors are the people we see every day — the people we wave to, work alongside and help when needed. Perhaps we should spend less time deciding who is politically “right” and more time remembering what we have in common. We are neighbors first.

The Editor:
In regards to the proposed roundabout at Birch Bay-Lynden and Blaine intersection, I agree with Dave Reed’s letter in the last Northern Light. I can’t imagine a stoplight would cost $3.8 million, even with maintenance.

The other concern I have is when there is a train backup or a busy summer day or holiday, like the Fourth of July or Labor Day. The traffic coming from the railroad tracks will just be constant through the roundabout and cars waiting on Blaine Road will not be able to enter the roundabout or try to force their way in, and that is dangerous.

I really think this is a dumb idea, unless someone at the county can explain why the roundabout is better than a stoplight. What is the obsession with these roundabouts?
