Blaine varsity soccer suffered a heartbreaking 2–1 overtime loss in a must-win playoff game at Lakewood on October 31.

Making the defeat harder to bear, Blaine took a 1–0 lead minutes from the end of the game; senior midfielder Madeline Hall scored in the 77th minute, breaking a tense stalemate.

Lakewood scored in the 80th and final minute, forcing an overtime period. Lakewood scored a sudden death goal four minutes into the overtime period.

“It was emotional, especially with the way the girls played,” said Blaine head coach Gio Quesada. “To me, it was the best performance of the season.”

The game was a big improvement over Blaine’s last meeting with Lakewood, a 3–0 Lakewood victory on October 3.

In addition to his team, Quesada also praised assistant coaches Gerry Wheaton and Stacy Esposito, and Blaine soccer supporters for traveling to the game.

“I want to say thank you to the parents, because it’s amazing to play an away game and have more fans there,” he said. “I also want to say a special thank you to my coaches.”

The loss ends Blaine’s season, with a 7–9–1 record overall.
