A tradition that began in 1946 to honor Lummi Nation veterans coming home from World War II is returning for another year.

The 80th annual Lummi Stommish Water Festival will run Thursday-Sunday on the nation’s Stommish Grounds, 2295 Lummi View Drive.

Organizers describe Stommish as an annual celebration of warriors of the past and present, culture and community.

Events at the four-day festival include the renowned war canoe races for children and adults, traditional singing and dancing, Sla-Hal (stick game) tournament, a veterans’ parade, salmon barbecue, vendors and a carnival with rides and games.

The event is open to the public. Admission is free.

“Stommish is a time to gather, honor our veterans, uplift our youth and carry forward the spirit of the people,” organizers said on the Stommish website.

Event dates and other details, including the schedule for canoe races, can be found at lummistommish.com.
