We got through a hot one last weekend, when a heat wave struck Whatcom County.

How hot was it?

It was scorching on Sunday with a high of 86 degrees. That’s hotter than a record max of 81 degrees in 2002, according to the National Weather Service.

Bellingham roasted under record-breaking temperatures on Sunday, with a high of 84 degrees — surpassing the 1988 record of 83 degrees, according to the National Weather Service

As for this weekend, the weather will be sunny but cooler, with a high of 68 degrees on Saturday and 71 degrees on Sunday in Birch Bay, just in time for the return of the Kids Kite Festival.

The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 20, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 21, at Birch Bay State Park, 7290 Birch Bay Drive. A Discover Pass is required for parking at the state park.
