The Lady Borderites had a great week overall, with girls golf posting back-to-back first place finishes for a 1A Northwest Conference (NWC) team, and softball rolling to two consecutive wins and a 4-2 start to the young season.

GIRLS GOLF

Catching up on last week’s action, Blaine finished second overall and first among NWC teams at Loomis Trail Golf Course on March 23, with Olivia Tanjuaquio and Thora Engen finishing in the top-10 on the nine-hole course.

Two days later, the Borderite duo logged a top-5 finish on March 25 at Swinomish Golf Links, with Tanjuaquio and Engen each shooting a stellar score of 51, tying for fifth place.

Not far behind in the individual standings were Hannah Phelps-McDonald, placing 10th with a 56; Sydney Arus, placing 12th with a 57; and Megan Rosenberger, who finished 16th with a score of 64.

All together, the three top-10 finishes at Swinomish gave Blaine a team score of 334, beating out 1A NWC foes Meridian, Lynden Christian and Nooksack Valley. In a field of eight NWC teams, Blaine finished third overall and first among 1A teams.

Blaine girls golf is scheduled to face Bellingham at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 2 (after press time) at Sudden Valley Golf and Country Club. The team won’t play again until 3 p.m. Thursday, April 16 at Whidbey Golf Club.

SOFTBALL

After starting the season without scoring a run against Napavine on March 20, Blaine softball’s bats have been hot ever since, and the Borderites have jumped out to a solid 4-2 record.

In a pair of home games at Pipeline Fields this past week, Blaine smacked Orcas Island 14-2 on Saturday, March 28, and continued to roll against Lakewood on Tuesday, March 31, winning 19-6.

In the five games since that opening day shutout, the Borderites have scored 73 runs on offense, allowed just 25 on defense and gone 4-1.

Freshman pitcher Charley Bakker earned her third win of the season against Orcas Island, striking out four batters over five innings of work. Senior catcher Aaliyah Bowman supplied the power with a home run and four RBIs.

Against Lakewood, almost everyone in the starting lineup got in on the offensive action but it was senior Mesa Puls who shined, pitching a complete game and hitting her third home run of the season while driving in five runs. To round out the Borderites’ scoring endeavors, Bowman, Aaliyah Broyan, Courtney Roff and Kate Koreski scored three runs each.

As of March 29, Puls leads the NWC in the three major hitting stats: batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage, posting a ridiculous slash line of .700/.842/1.700.

Next up for the Borderites is a matchup against Ferndale at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 2 (after press time) at Pipeline Fields. After a spring break hiatus, softball will be back in action against Lynden Christian at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14 at Pipeline Fields.
