Fall is upon us. It’s in the changing of the leaves; the way they shift from green to yellow to crimson and burnt orange. It shows up in the crisping and cooling of the air, and in dwindling daylight as the days grow shorter.
As the seasons change, so can the way we experience the outdoors. Fall offers a welcome opportunity to get moving, spend time with friends and enjoy the beautiful scenery Whatcom County has to offer. For older adults especially, a walk through the changing colors can be a chance to stay active while enjoying the outdoors at a comfortable pace.
On Friday, Oct. 16, Blaine-Birch Bay Park and Recreation District 2 will host a Fall Foliage Walk at Whatcom Falls Park.
The Whatcom Creek Trail Loop, a popular trail at Whatcom Falls Park, is 4.1 miles with a mild elevation gain of just under 300 feet. Along the way, participants can expect views of the falls and surrounding forest and might even spot some local wildlife.
For those who want to prioritize staying active as they age, walking can be a simple, low-impact form of exercise, and the Fall Foliage Walk provides an opportunity to get some fresh air and enjoy the company of a group.
The walk will happen rain or shine, so it’s recommended to wear layers, weather-appropriate clothing and good walking shoes.
Participants will meet at the Birch Bay Activity Center, 7511 Gemini St., at 9 a.m. to ride together to the park, and are expected to return at 3 p.m. It costs $5 per person and is open to all ages. Registration is required, available at bit.ly/4hmNzuL.
