Fund Schools Now, a local grassroots organization dedicated to help bring in more money to the Blaine school district, announced a public town hall forum on the state of school funding. The forum will be held at the Blaine Middle School Performing Arts Center, 975 H Street, at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, January 6.
The event is expected to have student speakers share first-hand experiences of how three consecutive years of budget cuts at the Blaine school district has affected their education. Representatives from Lynden and Bellingham school districts will also be in attendance.
Event organizers have confirmed the attendance of state lawmakers including Senator Sharon Shewmake and representatives Alicia Rule and Joe Timmons. The event will hope to show lawmakers how dire the state of public education funding has become, and comes less than a week before the state legislative session opens on Monday, January 12.
The upcoming legislative session is “short,” lasting at most 60 days with an expected end date of March 12, as opposed to the 105-day session in 2025.
Fund Schools Now is offering for people to submit questions for the state lawmakers, which can be filled out at fundblaineschoolsnow.com, and will offer on-site childcare during the town hall.
