After enacting a burn ban in early August, the Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office has modified restrictions and is permitting recreational fires throughout the county.
According to a news release from the fire marshal’s office, recent rainfall is the reason for the ease on restrictions, which went into effect at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, September 20.
All outdoor burning is still banned, including land debris and fires.
Recreational fires must stay within enclosures that are a minimum 16 inches high and made of steel, brick or rock.
Fires can span three feet in width and length and must be at least 25 feet away from structures, timber or combustible material. No burning is permitted when winds exceed 7 mph.
Violations of the ban can result in a fine of up to $250.
Restrictions are subject to change. For up-to-date information about what types of burning is permitted in Whatcom County, call 360/778-5903 or visit http://bit.ly/2hyovH0.
