City of Blaine seeks commission, committee and board applicants

The city of Blaine is looking for volunteers to provide input in everything from tourism funding to hiring future police officers.

The city recently announced that it is trying to fill vacancies by the end of the year on the Blaine Tourism Advisory Committee (BTAC), Blaine Public Works and Park Advisory Board, Civil Service Commission and Blaine Planning Commission.

Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. Friday, November 7, though vacancies will remain open until filled. Interviews are expected at either the Blaine City Council meeting in mid-November or early December.

BTAC has openings for its citizen at-large position, a partial term that concludes at the end of this year; a Blaine Chamber of Commerce representative, a partial term concluding at the end of 2027, and its lodging industry representative, a full-term concluding at the end of 2028.

BTAC is a nine-member committee that advises city council on how to grow the city’s tourism and recreation economy, which includes recommending what projects receive city grant funding. BTAC meets for about two hours one Tuesday morning per month.

The Public Works and Park Advisory Board has four positions open: Two partial terms concluding at the end of 2025 and 2026 as well as two full-terms beginning January 1, 2026. The seven-member board provides recommendations on the city’s parks, cemetery and public works projects. The group meets at 9 a.m. for about an hour during the first Tuesday of each month.

The Civil Service Commission has one full-term position starting January 1, 2026. The three-member commission help with the hiring of new police officers and other decisions for the police department. The commission meets at 3:30 p.m. for about one hour during the fourth Tuesday of each month.

Blaine Planning Commission has a vacancy for one commissioner position that ends December 31, 2028. The group, which makes planning recommendations for city council, meets at 6 p.m. during the second Thursday of every month.

Applicants must live within city limits and be a U.S. citizen.
