A brush fire burned over four acres of a field on Sunday near Harborview and Drayton Harbor roads.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue, also known as Whatcom County Fire District 21, and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources were dispatched to the scene at around 3:30 p.m. after reports of smoke in the area.

When crews arrived, two acres of land had been consumed in a “creeping brush fire,” which ended up scorching a total of over four acres, according to district Chief Jason Van Der Veen.

There were no road closures, but water tenders were staged on Drayton Harbor Road, temporarily closing one lane.

Van Der Veen said a neighbor reported hearing a motorcycle or dirt bike in the area prior to the fire. After the area had been cleared, crews did not find any evidence indicating another cause for the fire. Van Der Veen reported that there were no injuries or damages to any structures.

Whatcom County crews worked for about five hours, and Van Der Veen said crews from the Department of Natural Resources continued working on the scene until about 9 p.m.
