Boys basketball undefeated after five games

The Blaine boys varsity basketball team is undefeated and averaging more than 80 points per game after five games. Blaine beat Squalicum, its first conference opponent and toughest yet, on December 16 at home by a score of 76–70.

“That was our first real test,” said Blaine head coach Brett Farrar. “Our guys just battled. We couldn’t be prouder of our kids.”

After a back-and-forth start, a strong second half propelled Blaine to victory; the Borderites are yet to be outscored in a second half.

Zane Rector scored 30 points, Kyle Turnberg had 16 and Josh Russ had 13. Ben Arps scored eight and played dogged defense against Squalicum’s top scorer, Devante Powell, holding him below his scoring average.

Though Blaine’s season will get tougher from here, winning five in a row is Blaine’s best start in more than a decade.

“I think the biggest thing for us is it validates everything for our players,” Farrar said. “They’re realizing that what we’re all about and the type of basketball we’re playing will allow them to be successful. You can see their confidence and their swagger growing.”

Next, the Borderites travel to Lynden Christian (0–1) to play at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, December 20.
