A shoreline showcase of creativity: Birch Bay's 43rd annual Sand Sculpture Competition

People flocked to Birch Bay Beach Park for the 43rd annual Sand Sculpture Competition on Saturday, Aug. 1 despite morning showers. As the sun peeked out in the afternoon, participants used buckets, shovels, paintbrushes and lots of water to carve and mold their intricate sand creations. Team "I'm Freezing, Just Pick a Name" won the little kids competition; team "Sensational Sandbaggers" won the singles, duos and trios competition; team "Shepard Sand Slayers" won the small groups competition; and team "Salty Weiner Dog" won the large groups competition.
