By Oliver Lazenby Twenty-eight cyclists from the University of Texas at Austin pedaled through Blaine on July 15 on their way from Austin, Texas, to Anchorage, Alaska. The group of students is riding for an organization called Texas 4000, which organizes the ride annually to raise money for cancer research.
The group started in Austin on May 31 and plans to reach Anchorage on August 9, averaging 86 miles a day on a more than 4,000-mile route. The group raises money through donations and gives it out in grants to organizations that focus on cancer research and cancer support services.
“Every day is a highlight,” cyclist Guillermo Beltran said about the trip so far, “whether it’s what happens on the bike or just interacting with someone at a gas station and telling people about what we’re doing.”
