Blaine and Birch Bay residents will likely hear tsunami sirens sounding on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 10:15 a.m. for International ShakeOut Day.
International ShakeOut Day is the largest earthquake drill in the world, and always occurs on the third Thursday of October.
This will be Washington’s 15th year participating in the event, which is officially called the Great Washington ShakeOut. Over 65 million people worldwide participate in practicing their drop, cover and hold technique to ensure they’re prepared in case of an earthquake.
The ShakeOut is the only time tsunami sirens are tested using the actual wail sound that would be used in an emergency situation, and is followed with a message to clarify that it is a drill. In Whatcom County, tsunami sirens are regularly tested on the first Monday of each month, when the Westminster chimes are played.
