A handful of Borderite wrestlers showed their mettle in the Pac-Coast Wrestling Championships, one of the larger wrestling tournaments in the state.
Seven Blaine wrestlers made the trip to Vancouver, WA on January 3, and three of them earned medals against top high school wrestlers from California, Oregon and Washington. A total of 33 teams, mostly from 4A schools, competed.
“It’s a really high-level competition,” said Blaine head coach Craig Foster. “The guys we took to the tournament were all competitive in their matches, so it was a good tournament for us.”
Caleb Frey had a breakout performance at 145 pounds, taking home the second-place medal. In four matches leading up to the championship match, Frey didn’t give up a single point.
In the championship match, he wrestled to a triple overtime with Tommy Strassenburg, who is ranked second in Washington, before losing 4–3.
Anthony Frey made it to the semifinals at 138 pounds before losing in overtime to earn the sixth-place medal. Riley Fritsch bowed out in the 145-pound quarterfinals to earn a seventh-place medal. Colton Economy won three matches at 120 pounds.
“We don’t have a lot of depth in weights, so our approach this season is to get our good wrestlers the toughest competition we can find so they’re prepared for individual success at the state tournament,” Foster said.
Blaine will wrestle in the Panther Classic at Snohomish High School on Saturday, January 10. The tournament begins at 9:30 a.m.
