Upcoming fashion show to benefit survivors of human trafficking

For the second year in a row, Betty Be Good boutique in Birch Bay will be hosting a fundraiser fashion show, Liberty in Style, to benefit Engedi Refuge. The Lynden charity provides restorative programs for survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

For Betty Be Good owner Suzanne Smith, supporting this cause has always been on her mind. Before opening Betty Be Good in 2011 with its humanitarian angle, Smith worked in Vancouver, B.C. for the Salvation Army to help establish a safe house for survivors called Deborah’s Gate.

“We’ve known about trafficking for a decade, but it’s still pretty new in terms of awareness,” Smith said. “I’m not sure if people realize it’s still going on, and in this area even.”

Betty’s Liberty Closet, a part of Smith’s business, benefits the survivors at Engedi Refuge year-round by sending them brand-new clothing or allowing them to come into the store to pick clothing. Smith’s boutique has been providing this service for the past three years, but she decided to branch out with a fashion show just last year.

“We didn’t know what to expect, but we had 200 guests and 18 models,” Smith said.

This year, there will be 25 models, including seven kids and a four-month-old puppy. A survivor of trafficking will be walking with her teenage daughter, along with several other mothers and daughters. A grandmother will also be accompanying her granddaughter. Models are all local, from Whatcom County and from across the border, allowing for a cross-border celebration.

Several fundraising activities will take place during the event. Popular last year, 250 helium balloons filled with prizes and priced at $10 each will be available, giving attendees the chance to win prizes from Subway, Bob’s Burgers and Semiahmoo Resort, among many other businesses.

“Everyone’s stilettos come out and they pop the balloons,” Smith said with a laugh. “It’s just a really playful, fun way to spread the love.”

The event will also feature live music, refreshments and a silent auction. In true West Coast fashion, casual attire is completely acceptable.

“We feel that Liberty in Style means that you should come as you are,” Smith said. “Come in jeans, bring your best from your fashion point-of-view.”

Local businesses such as Woods Coffee, Edaleen Dairy and Village Books will be sponsoring the event. Bass Factory Outlet will be providing all the shoe styling.

Liberty in Style will take place on September 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Birch Bay Square. Tickets are available both online and at the door on the day of the event for $20. All proceeds from the event go towards supporting Engedi Refuge.

For those unable to attend Liberty in Style, Smith recommends people donate to Engedi Refuge at engedirefuge.com.
