Blaine boys wrestling won its first tournament of the season December 3 in Everett.
Four Blaine wrestlers took first in their weight class after seven made it to the finals at the 13-school invite Mariner Holiday Tournament, accumulating a total of 195 points to take the team victory. Marysville Pilchuck High School took second with 144 points.
Tim Pomeroy, Cael Button, Joel Barrientos-Estrada and Victor Gervol won at their respective weight classes of 126, 132, 220 and 285 pounds. Cal Fitzgerald, Thomas Cox and Christian Bullard took second at 138, 145 and 160.
Head coach Tom Hinz said the team has won the tournament in the past.
“It was exciting to have seven guys in the finals,” Hinz said. “It was a good day.”
The team will host its two-day, 13-team invite Battle at the Border tournament this weekend, Friday, December 9 starting at 1 p.m. and Saturday, December 10 starting at 8 a.m. in the Blaine High School gymnasium.
Last year the team took fifth, but Hinz said the team is looking better this year, with a strong contingent of varsity wrestlers. Ferndale and Camas high schools are two to watch out for, as Hinz said they were bringing up to 20 and 40 wrestlers. He said they have a lot of bodies.
“It would be great to take home a trophy,” Hinz said.
