New county health department graphic shows number of new virus cases per week decreasing

The Whatcom County Health Department’s website now includes some new information about COVID-19 cases in the county, including an epidemiological curve or “epi curve” that shows the number of new cases each week.

“We can clearly see from our epi curve that the number of new cases each week has peaked and is decreasing,” said Amy Hockenberry, health information and assessment supervisor at the health department, during an April 20 virtual press briefing.

During the week that began on April 12, the health department reported 11 new cases. The highest weekly total occurred the week of March 22, when the health department reported 107 total cases. The number of deaths per week peaked the week of March 29, when 12 died.

The health department is also including new graphs of confirmed cases and deaths by age category. Confirmed cases are spread relatively evenly across age categories, while deaths skew heavily toward the elderly; people in their 90s make up 44 percent of COVID-19 deaths so far in Whatcom County.
