Get ready to Run with the Chums

Runners and walkers will assemble on Saturday, September 14 for the seventh annual Run with the Chums 5k and Smolt Sprint 1k.

The free event will take place at the BP Highlands off of Grandview Road between Jackson Road and Point Whitehorn Road in Birch Bay starting at 10 a.m.

Hosted by the Whatcom Conservation District (WCD) in conjunction with Whatcom Water Week, the event will feature refreshments, children’s activities and hands-on exhibits. Registration is free for the 5k and 1k races with the first 300 registrants receiving a complimentary shirt; 1k racers will also get a ribbon.

“The event gives folks an active, healthy way to experience being outdoors and in their watershed,” said Aneka Sweeney, WCD’s education and outreach coordinator. “We’re able to give them some really pertinent information about the importance of salmon habitat restoration, orca populations and how each of us can make a difference in our own lives.”

The 5k route starts at 10:30 a.m. and winds through a scenic loop above the Cherry Point Aquatic Reserve and Point Whitehorn, offering coastal views. The 1k route starts at 10 a.m. and features a salmon-themed obstacle course for kids.

Whatcom Water Week, which inspired the event, takes place September 14 to 22. It aims to teach the public about the vital importance of water as well as raise awareness about stewardship opportunities through partnerships with local businesses, nonprofits and community groups.

To register for the 5k or 1k race, visit whatcomcd.org/run-with-the-chums or do so in person at the event. An estimated 275 people participated in last year’s Run with the Chums.
