Borderites earn six All-NWC honors

The 2024-2025 high school sports season is officially over, and Blaine’s graduating seniors have thrown their caps in the air. But athletic honors are still rolling in, with multiple Borderites earning All-Northwest Conference (NWC) selections for their great performances over the spring season.

Softball

Shaylie Daniels was the lone Borderite named on the end of year All-Northwest Conference softball team, earning a well-deserved first-team selection after lighting the scorebook on fire all season.

The senior catcher/pitcher/third base contributed on offense with a .608 batting average, striking out just three times in 66 plate appearances and tallying eight doubles and three home runs.

When not behind the dish catching, Daniels also made huge contributions on the mound, pitching 59 1/3 innings over the season and striking out 58 batters.

All told, Daniels put together an outstanding senior year, leading a young Borderite team through a long, grueling schedule against some of the best teams in the state.

Baseball

Borderite baseball earned two All-NWC second-team selections, with catcher Evan Yates and pitcher Josh Cochran claiming the honors.

Yates led the team as the backstop all season, providing great defense and leadership at a physically demanding position while also leading the team in most hitting categories.

Yates finished the season with a .400 batting average, and an OPS (on base plus slugging percentage) at 1.021, both fantastic milestones to end his high school career.

Cochran pitched 38 1/3 innings for the Borderites and was one of the team’s most dependable starters throughout the season. The sophomore was one of only two underclassmen named to the All-NWC first- or second-team, showing lots of promise for the latter half of his high school pitching career.

Cochran displayed great command of the zone, allowing just seven walks compared to 67 strikeouts, and was the youngest pitcher named to this year’s All-NWC teams.

Boys soccer

After an impressive Cinderella run that saw the Borderite defeat rival Lynden Christian twice in the postseason and come just one win shy of a state playoff berth, brothers Max and Dima Yuryev were honored with All-NWC selections.

Controlling the midfield and constantly threatening on offense, the junior Dima led the Borderites on offense all season, finishing second in the conference with 12 goals through May 25. With the Borderites scoring 23 goals throughout the regular and postseason, Dima accounted for more than the majority of Blaine’s offensive production.

The elder brother Max, a now-graduated senior, held down the defense the entire season for the Borderites, playing nearly every single minute of the season from the center back position. The Borderites posted four shutouts throughout the season with help from Max leading a veteran back line that will see multiple seniors graduating this year.

Track and field

Sophomore Teia Dube was named to the first-team All-NWC track and field team in the high jump category after consistently placing among the top in the conference and earning first place in the 1A Bi-District championship.

Dube qualified for the state championship with a 4’10” high jump in districts, and set a personal best of 5’2” while finishing 13th in the 1A State tournament, one of the highest finishes for an underclassman.
