County might consider permanent bathrooms for Birch Bay

The biggest news to come out of today's (July 19) Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce meeting seemed to be the progress county executive Pete Kremen has made with bathrooms for Birch Bay. Chamber president John Gargett said Kremen secured about $4,000 on July 1 for the 14 portable restrooms that are now lining parts of Birch Bay Drive.

Birch Bay Ducky Derby winners announced

As part of the Discovery Days celebration over the weekend, the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce hosted the Ducky Derby rubber duck race, which pitted fowl against fowl in a race along Terrell Creek. The chamber posted the winners on its blog, and I thought they deserved to show up here, too.

County and Department of Ecology will co-lead Cherry Point terminal review

As the last post for this Friday afternoon, I present two letters: one from Whatcom County to the Washington State Department of Ecology, and one from the department of ecology to the county. Earlier today, county planning supervisor Tyler Schroeder sent a letter to ecology director Ted Sturdevant requesting that the department of ecology become a co-lead agency in the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) review of the Gateway Pacific Terminal proposed by Seattle-based SSA Marine.

Birch Bay Water and Sewer District talks lock-off policy

Consider this the first in a what will hopefully be a series of posts following the various governmental meetings I attend as part of my job as a reporter. These posts will describe what was discussed at these meetings and may or may not be expanded into a full story. As a reporter, I consider myself the eyes and ears of roughly 10,000 people (The estimated readership of The Northern Light), and these posts will be part of connecting these people with their local governments.

Glenn Golay has pleaded guilty to nine counts of first-degree theft

I just got this story up on the main website this morning, but I figured I should post about it here since this is where I broke the news about Golay's plea deal and sentencing.
