NOAA ship moored in Birch Bay is updating nautical charts

A few people have asked us here at The Northern Light for more information on the sizable ship that has been anchored in Birch Bay for the last day or so. After some digging, and much appreciated help from Washington State Department of Ecology spokesman Larry Altose, I've found out the vessel is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ship Rainier. According to the Rainier's website, the vessel is in the middle of surveying the Strait of Georgia in order to update NOAA's nautical charts for the area.

County auditor's office releases voters' guide

Let the races begin! The Whatcom County Auditor's Office has mailed out and posted on its website the 2011 primary election voters' guide. The primary elections will be held Tuesday, August 16, and the ballots will be mailed out on Friday, July 29 (two days from now).

Snowbirds to grace skies over Semiahmoo Bay this evening

I just got a press release from Canada's Snowbirds Aerial Flight team, who will be performing this evening (July 27) starting at 6 in the skies above Semiahmoo Bay.

County planning commission will consider land rezone near Drayton Harbor

At its Thursday, July 28, meeting, the Whatcom County Planning Commission will consider whether to recommend a request to rezone about 472 acres south of Drayton Harbor to the county council. County council member Sam Crawford put in the request to change the land's current zoning, which allows one dwelling unit per 10 acres (R10) to zoning that would allow one unit per five acres (R5). The land was originally zoned for four units per acre (UR4) but was downzoned in November 2009 when it was removed from Blaine's urban growth area (UGA).

Blaine school board to re-examine capital projects bond

In addition to a presentation of next school year's budget, tonight's (July 25) Blaine school board meeting will include a discussion of a possible reduced bond initiative to take care of some of the district's most vital construction needs. As I'm sure most of your remember, the district's $32 million bond failed to pass by 0.8 percent in April, delaying improvements to most of Blaine High School's buildings.
