Whatcom County Public Works staff want to change the speed limits on two small sections of county roads east of Birch Bay in preparation for an eventual stoplight.

County engineer Joe Rutan is recommending the speed limits on small sections of Birch Bay-Lynden Road and Portal Way be changed from 50 mph to 35 mph. The road sections stretch 1000 feet from the intersection of Birch Bay-Lynden Road and Portal Way, near the Birch Bay Square shopping center.

The ordinance making the change official is scheduled to be introduced at the June 5 Whatcom County Council meeting (tomorrow). County council members will take no action on the ordinance but will schedule a public hearing on the issue.
The speed limit changes are in preparation for a county project that will replace the existing four-way stop with a four-way traffic light.

The project will include, among other things, dedicated left and right turn lanes, a crosswalk spanning the southern portion of Portal Way and integration with the nearby railroad crossing. Construction is expected to last from May to September of 2013. Click here for my last story on this project.

See the agenda bill proposing the speed limit change, with a map of the affected road sections, below. Click here for the county council’s full agenda for the evening of June 5. The council meeting will start at  7 p.m. in the county council chambers in Bellingham.
