Whatcom County officials have the extended the deadline for consultants submitting applications to conduct the environmental review of the shipping terminal proposed for the Cherry Point area.

Proposals are now due at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14, at the Whatcom County Courthouse. County officials will publicly open the bid proposals once they have all been received.

Whatcom County planning staff are seeking proposals from private consultants to conduct the extensive environmental impact statement (EIS) for the $600 million Gateway Pacific Terminal proposed for the Cherry Point area just south of Birch Bay. County officials released a request for proposals in mid-January and initially set February 7 as the due date.

The request document lists numerous possible impacts of the terminal that must be studied, including effects on wetlands in the Cherry Point area, rail and cargo vessel traffic, air quality and human health, just to name a few. The environmental review process for the terminal will involve input from the public, and the agencies overseeing the EIS (the Whatcom County planning department, state Department of Ecology and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) will require public outreach as part of the environmental review process.
