Blaine High School seniors Jon Stewart and Alexis McElwain were named the 2014 Athletes of the Year at a school assembly May 28.
Stewart was captain of the football team that made it to state in 2013. He was also captain of the boys wrestling team that
won in the 1A state championship in 2014, where he placed second in the state at 160 lbs.
A passionate wrestler, Stewart signed a letter of intent to attend Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa. Stewart said he is excited to wrestle at the collegiate level, adding that Waldorf College’s location in Iowa influenced his decision to go there. Iowa is considered the epicenter of American wrestling.
Stewart was named the 2014 Male Athlete of the Year.
“I worked hard and this puts the stamp on it,” Stewart said. “It’s a big thing for my family. I feel honored.”
Alexis McElwain was named the 2014 Female Athlete of the Year. A three-letter athlete, she was captain of the girls soccer, girls basketball and softball teams. She led the girls basketball team to the state tournament in 2014, where they placed fifth overall in 1A.
McElwain was accepted to the University of Washington School of Medicine. She said she’s excited for the fall semester to begin.
