The wrestling team put on a winning show for the home crowd last week – make that two shows, as they bested both Sehome and Ferndale. The Borderites won both dual meets with points to spare: 66-12 against Sehome and 48-15 against Ferndale. The two wins advance their season record in dual meets to a perfect seven wins, no losses.

Coach Craig Foster said he was happy to wrestle at home for a change.

“We haven’t had a lot of home matches,” he said. “It’s always good to get some wins at home.”

Against Sehome on January 23, the senior captains led their team with fast pins. First, 152-lb. Justin Belding pinned Sehome’s Asa Arena in 39 seconds, then 220-lb. Caleb Johnson pinned Josh Whitman in 28 seconds.

It was an appropriate start to senior night, when the seniors are recognized in their last year of varsity sports, and they in turn recognize the support of their parents by bringing a flower out to the stands.

Following Belding’s and Johnson’s lead, 120-lb. freshman Trevin Brady, 160-lb. junior Jon Stewart and 182-lb. senior Dwayne Ortega pinned their Sehome opponents.

Freshman Anthony Frey (132 lbs.) won his match by a 12-6 decision, and 138-lb. freshman Caleb Frey won by a 7-2 decision. Stuey Rasar, a 106-lb. freshman, 113-lb. sophomore Billy Dodd, 195-lb. junior Israel Hernandez and 285-lb. junior Mikey Antczak won by forfeit because Sehome had no one to wrestle at those weights.

In a rescheduled meet against Ferndale on January 24, Blaine repeated its success with another quick start, but this time the winning pattern was jump-started by the lightweights.

Kyle Gonzales, a 106-lb. freshman, was back in action after sustaining an elbow injury and won the first match of the night by a 15-0 decision. Dodd (113 lbs.) next pinned his opponent, Troy Lacy, in three minutes, 56 seconds.

Brady lost an 11-4 decision against Ferndale’s Devon Bennett in the 120-lb. matchup. Lott beat Ferndale’s 126-lb. Adeaus Wilson-Premo 7-6. Anthony and Caleb Frey pinned their opponents, 132-lb. Braiden Klint and 138-lb. Cory Slaughter, respectively. Junior Christian Sharp defeated Ferndale’s Miguel Mungaro 8-2. Belding won a 9-0 decision over Ferndale’s 152-lb. wrestler.

Blaine sophomore 145-lb. Ethan Childers was pinned by Erik Engels. Stewart won a 7-0 decision against Sean Mittelstaedt. Ortega won an 8-6 decision against Nate Carlson. Hernandez was pinned by Ferndale’s Sam Alexander. Johnson defeated Kam Williams in a 7-1 decision, and Antczak pinned his opponent Chris Hernandez.

“Our lightweights did a good job of battling tough opponents,” Foster said after the meet. “Trevin Brady forced his match to a decision. A loss can still be good for overall team points if they lose by decision rather than a pin, and it’s something a lot of people don’t notice.”

The Borderites head to the sub regionals at Squalicum High School on Friday, February 1. Matches begin at 6 p.m.
