The Borderites, led by upperclassmen Shaypher Hendricks and Caleb Johnson, took home a 20th place overall finish out of 64 teams at the Mat Classic XXIV on Friday and Saturday, February 17-18, at the Tacoma Dome.
Blaine finished the first day in 14th place with 24 points, and earned another 12.5 on Saturday to finish with 36.5 team points.
Hendricks, wrestling in the 145-pound weight class, and Johnson, wrestling in the 195-pound class, were the only two Borderites to advance to the semifinal rounds on Saturday. Both were pinned in the first period of their matches.
Hendricks managed to battle back and win two straight matches. He beat Ellensburg’s Kamal Qteishat 8-3 to secure a third-place medal.
Johnson lost the match following his semifinal defeat, but then beat Olympic’s Caleb O’Halek to earn fifth place.
