In cross country, Blaine’s Tom Bradley had a strong start to his season after a one-year hiatus. The Borderite distance runner won the first place medal in Blaine’s Northwest Conference (NWC) opener at Lake Padden with a winning time of 13:52.4, Thursday, September 8. The junior, being courted by Division 1 Notre Dame, Brown and New Mexico State, went on to finish fourth overall at the Sehome Cross Country Invitational at Civic Field in Bellingham, Saturday, September 10.

Blaine’s top girls runner, Kiersten Sigfusson, did not run as she is recovering from a viral infection that required hospitalization. A date for her return is unknown as she seeks a third consecutive trip to state.

The girls’ soccer team was swept in the first three games of the season. NWC power Lynden Christian crushed the Borderites 9-1 in the opener at Bender Fields in Lynden. Blaine rebounded with a stronger effort defensively before falling to Granite Falls 2-0 in the Borderites home opener at Pipeline fields.

Blaine’s best opportunity for victory was lost when the Borderites squandered a 2-0 lead and Nooksack Valley stormed back for a 3-2 NWC victory, Saturday, September 10 at Nooksack Middle School. Cassie Richardson scored both goals for Blaine.
