Blaine track teams hit ground running

The Borderite girls track team began defense of their 2A team state championship by cruising to solid victories over Lynden and Nooksack Valley in the season opener for all three schools, March 19 at Rollie DeKoster Field.

At the same meet, the Blaine boys won eight events to defeat the Lions and the Pioneers, led by Caleb Statham, who won the 100m and 200m sprints and Tom Bradley, who won 800m and 1600m runs.

Four-time state champion Cherish Morrison extended her unprecedented unbeaten streak to 40-0 with wins in the 100m, 200m and with the 4x100 team.

Olivia Moore also dominated the meet by winning three events: the 100m hurdles, the long jump and the triple jump.

Girl’s state pole vault champion Robin Taylor began her quest for a second title, winning 10-6.

Other winners for the girls were Kiersten Sigfusson in the 400m run, Rachel McKinstry in the 300m hurdles, and Penina Laolagi in the shot putt.

McKinstry, Taylor and Sigfusson joined Morrison in winning the 4x100.

Boys winners included Andrew Montgomery in the 3200m run, Tusapa Laolagi in the high jump, Tucker Morgan in the javelin and Brett Mattson in the pole vault.
