Borderites send 11 to state wrestling tournament
Blaine is sending one of the strongest teams ever to the state wrestling tournament this week, to be held Friday and Saturday, February 20 and 21, at the Tacoma Dome. Coach Craig foster is taking 11 wrestlers, six of whom won their divisions at last weekend’s regional tournament. Held here in Blaine, the Borderites won the 14-team regional battle for the second year in a row and are a good bet to at least equal last year’s second place finish at the state tournament.
Alex Pennington (160) won his weight division for the first time in his career. Competing against Burlington’s Corey Kleppe, the two wrestled to a scoreless tie after two periods.
Pennington led 2-1 at 1:27 of the third period but Kleppe came back with a two-point escape to lead 3-2 with 57 seconds left. Pennington went after him at that point, scoring a 2 point escape with 19 seconds left and then riding him out for the 4-3 victory.
Other Blaine wrestlers winning their divisions included Jacob Humphrey (119), Tony Jordan (125), D.J. Duncan (135), Tyson Foster (140) and Darrell Price (215).
Jeremy Holdaas (215) DQ’ed against Zach Jones of Granite Falls, finishing third and missing a chance to wrestle team mate Darrell Price for the 215-pound title.
Blaine junior A.J. Pieczynski (145) finished fifth in his division and will go to Tacoma as an alternate.
