Boys notch first conference at home

By Jack Kintner

With 6’2” senior forward Mitch Mekovich tossing in ten points off the bench, Blaine defeated Sehome in front of an appreciative home crowd last weekend 51 to 46 to improve to 3-8 (1-4).

Before fouling out junior Trey Bakogeorge led Blaine’s offense with 14 points, including two three-pointers. Trevor Chau got 13, Odie Johannesson 6, Greg Grasher 5 and Jordan McCarty 3. Blaine shot a respectable 42 percent from the floor (19 of 42) and sank 10 of 20 freethrows. Though behind in rebounding 28-17, Blaine had far fewer turnovers with just 11 to Sehome’s 16.

After a Wednesday, January 28, match against Squalicum the Borderites next face Lynden on the road on Saturday, January 31.

As if winning the Northwest Conference Championship weren’t enough, Blaine high school wrestling coach Craig Foster has been named the Northwest Sectional high School Wrestling Coach of the Year for 2008 by the National Association of High School Athletics.

But in a sad end to what was one of the Blaine wrestling program’s finest hours, long time supporter and friend to the program photographer Roland W. Spencer, 55, collapsed and died at his home in Silverdale last Saturday, January 24. Roland photographed most of Blaine’s wrestling matches in the years he followed the team, including last week’s match with Sedro Woolley that he thoroughly enjoyed. As a fellow photographer I valued his fine work and will miss him on the sidelines.

New coaches for the spring announced at Monday’s Blaine school board meeting include Steve Dodd, high school girls fastpitch coach, Kelcie Rocha, high school JV fastpitch coach, and Kelly Tuski, middle school girls soccer coach.
