Over
70 participate in annual tennis tournament
The 17th annual Skywater tennis tournament was held June
27� 29 at the Semiahmoo Golf and Country Club. The Blaine
Chamber of Commerce sponored the event, which was directed
by Eric Cramer and assisted by Joyce Vanderpol. The tournament
received about 70 entries, including men and women�s singles
and doubles and mixed doubles.
In the men�s A singles, Steve Ershig defeated Julian Torresa,
and Jouko Paavola defeated Rodny Lonquist in the men�s B
singles. Jeff Leer and Trey Ballard defeated Scott Bianchi
and John Freal in the men�s A doubles. The men�s B doubles
round robin will take place later.
The women�s B singles final between Patty Macheras and Denise
Bosman will be played at a later date. For the women�s B
doubles, Suzanne Ware and Gayle Davis defeated Pam Carl
and Liz Curry, and in the open mixed doubles, Tim Trott
and Mary Beaumont defeated Michael Reimer and Susanne Ball.
Playing together for the A mixed doubles, Jeff Leer and
his daughter Lauren, defeated John Freal and Shirley Hill.
For B mixed doubles, Courtney Turner and Carole Fairbrother
defeated Denise and Drew Bosman.
Wrestling
boot camp to be held later this month
The second annual Blaine wrestling boot camp, sponsored
by the Blaine Barracudas, will be Saturday, July 19 through
July 26 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Blaine high school gym.
The camp is for students who will be entering grades five
through 12 in the fall, and costs $75. Students who complete
the camp will receive a T-shirt.
Craig Foster, the Blaine wrestling coach, described the
camp as tough, militaristic, no-nonsense and designed for
wrestlers who are serious about improving. The camp�s primary
emphasis is on discipline, and learning specific aspects
of the Blaine wrestling system. Key components of the camp
include focus, listening with a purpose, hard work, teamwork,

Force
Black wins last week, Force Gray loses two
Force Black girls softball team won three games last week,
improving their record to four wins and one loss in the
Whatcom County girls fastpitch league. On June 25, the locals
defeated Sehome Thunder 15 -2, and on Wednesday, June 26
Black defeated Ferndale Lady Eagles in a double-hitter.
The team won the first game14 � 0 and the second game 6-1.
Blaine Gray played two games against the Lady Lions of Lynden
on Wednesday, June 25 and lost both games. The first game
was scored 6-5 and the second 9-5. Next game for both teams
will be Thursday, July 3 at 7 p.m. in Lynden when the Black
and Gray play each other.
