County relaxes shoreline development rules
After hearing from several waterfront property owners in a packed hearing last fall that shoreline development regulations were too restrictive, the Whatcom County Council unanimously adopted changes to the Shoreline Management Program last week that relax some, but not all, of the regulations.

As the deadline for tighter border ID requirements nears, some lawmakers say they are worried U.S. ports of entry won't be able to keep pace with an increase in traffic, especially during the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Airport deal sinks under economy
Plans to redevelop the former Blaine airport fell victim to the global economic slowdown on Tuesday, March 31 after the developers informed Blaine city officials they were letting their purchase agreement lapse. It’s full sails ahead for a new salt water recreation program at Drayton Harbor. Northwest Parks and Recreation District 2 and Drayton Harbor Maritime are co-sponsoring a community sailing school to begin in early June.

NW Projections, an annual juried festival showcasing the work of Washington State filmmakers, returns to downtown Bellingham on April 17 through 19. Festival-goers can get a taste of homegrown cinematic talent and vote on their favorites for the Audience Choice Award, which will be presented at a Sunday night awards ceremony along with the coveted Golden Hamster “Best of Fest” trophy.
County provides emergency training
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office division of emergency management, the Whatcom County citizen corps council, and the Bellingham Technical College (BTC) are collaborating to offer community emergency response team (CERT) training to those interested in becoming better prepared if and when a major disaster occurs. The next nine-week class will held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. beginning on April 14.
