The Pacific Arts Association and our community once again joined together in support of the 2013 Blaine Jazz Camp and

Events began in December with two benefit concerts. Jon Mutchler performed an original, creative and colorful collection of well-known holiday music for an appreciative audience seated onstage at the Performing Arts Center. The second concert featured Martin Kuuskmann and local musicians who delighted the audience with a Christmas Concert and Sing-Along.

March brought the Pacific Arts Association’s first auction. “Speakeasy” was a fabulously fun party. Attendees took the “costumes optional” suggestion seriously and arrived in fine representations of the decade. Greta Matassa and her band charmed the audience and they showed their appreciation by kicking up their heels on the dance floor. A wide variety of auction items donated by our generous community brought in a healthy sum to benefit the jazz camp.

The 12th annual Blaine Jazz Camp and Festival, July 7–13 was an incredible event. World-class musicians converged on Blaine for a magical week of student instruction and community performances. A full big band played to a packed house and dance floor at a perennial favorite, the Big Band Benefit, sponsored by Kathy Stauffer. The Friday Night Student Showcase, sponsored by Phillips 66, never ceases to amaze the audience with fabulous student performances after only one week of instruction.

2014 brings change, as the Blaine Jazz Festival is now the Drayton Harbor Music Festival. We will continue to deliver the same great jazz program, and will add a classical/contemporary program with the option to add additional programs in the coming years. The Drayton Harbor Music Festival will be held Sunday, July 6 through Saturday, July 12.

The work of the board goes on all year behind the scenes, organizing the festival and preparing events. Jon Mutchler will perform February 16 and the auction is April 6. We are excited to partner with Semiahmoo Resort for the 2014 music festival. I applaud the board and the entire community for their continuing support of this valuable community event.
