2013 was a successful year for Northwest Park and Recreation District 2 (NWPRD2).
The Birch Bay Activity Center is bustling with many programs. Our most popular program, Zumba, has grown to a community with over 200 participants. It also has the support of a well-known Hollywood choreographer who owns property in Blaine and attends Zumba when visiting.
Pickleball, one of the fastest growing sports in the Northwest, has shown a huge increase in attendees. This is particularly popular in inclement weather, as it can be played indoors. Pickleball is a game of strategy for men and women of all ages. The activity center houses two courts and offers a regular schedule.
2013 saw the addition of several new dance options for the center. Along with the popular ballroom dancing, featuring different dances each month, NPWRD2 also offers belly dancing and line dancing.
NWPRD2 sponsored and participated in local programs such as Wings Over Water, Discovery Days, Drayton Harbor Days, Let’s Move Blaine and the Holiday Lights Obstacle Dash.
This year we offered many kids programs such as Basketball Basics, Happy Happy Fun Time, Pirate Daze and summer game days as well as the overwhelmingly successful Kids Karnival, where more than 300 kids and parents took their chances with old fashioned (some with a new twist) carnival games.
In November, voters approved a levy that will finance NWPRD2 and the activity center. NWPRD2 will end the year with activities for the kids during winter break.
