Sometimes you have to give a little back, especially when you’ve received so much.
Last year, local Greg Nuzum found himself down on his luck. His wife underwent numerous open-heart surgeries and it took a toll on their family. “We went from two incomes to one,” Nuzum said. “It was tough to make ends meet. So we ended up at the food bank. That’s what it’s there for. Sometimes, you just have to swallow your pride.”
Now that he’s back on his feet, he wants to do his part so he’s hosting a benefit dance for the Blaine Community Food Bank that will be held on March 16 at the Horizon Community Center in Birch Bay. “It’s all by donation,” he said. “There’s a lot of families who rely on the food bank, so we just want to fill the [food bank] truck up as much as we can.”
Nuzum said he has had overwhelming support for the project, and expects as many as 300 people to drop in and boogie with him in honor of the food bank. “People really want to give,” he said.
A DJ will be spinning the tunes, and the family friendly dance will run from 7 to 10 p.m. at the center located at 7511 Gemini Road in Birch Bay.
“There will be chips, salsa and soda,” Nuzum said. “We’ll be holding a silent auction, a raffle, a dance contest and a free throw contest. Everyone is welcome. We want to meet some new people and have a good time.”
The food bank is accepting cash and non-perishable goods such as canned food and toiletries. For more information, contact Greg Nuzum at 360/961-2890.
