In a bizarre role-reversal that ended with an arrest, a 37-year-old Birch Bay mother was allegedly provoked into a murderous rage when her 17-year-old son broke her video game.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 5400 block of Petticote Lane at 8:15 p.m. February 26 in response to a domestic dispute. Deanna D. Vandyk allegedly attacked her son, first with her fists and then with a 10-inch butcher’s knife, after an argument broke out. She threatened to kill the boy and lunged at him with the knife, but he was able to wrestle the knife away from her without suffering any stab wounds.

The boy’s grandmother was on the scene and used her Life Alert emergency alert system to call for help when the argument turned violent. Vandyk was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and felony harassment for threatening to kill her son. She was booked into Whatcom County Jail just before midnight.

Sheriff Bill Elfo said the argument was reportedly started when the young man broke his mother’s Playstation video game.
