The cause of the fire that consumed what firefighters estimated to be an 800-square-foot vacation home on the 4700 block of Henley Street in Birch Bay early December 17 is still undetermined, according to Whatcom County Deputy fire marshal Wain Harrison.

“We’re still waiting for more information,” he said.

North Whatcom Fire and Rescue responded to what was reported as a chimney fire at 5:55 a.m., only to find the house fully involved and threatening other nearby structures with flames and heat.

Firefighters were able to gain control of the fire within 15 minutes of arrival, and continued to manage it for another hour to prevent it from spreading to other nearby structures.

The house is considered a total loss, Harrison said, but no one was injured in the blaze. One occupant, an unidentified male, was found outside when firefighters arrived on the scene.
