Whatcom County sheriff’s deputies have arrested Jacob S. Dezarn on charges of residential burglary, possession of stolen property in the first degree, possession of a stolen firearm and trafficking stolen property in the first degree.

The arrest on Friday, November 9, brings some sense of closure to a several months’ long investigation of burglaries that occurred in the Birch Bay area from May  to August 2012, and resulted in the recovery of property valued at more than $8,800.

Dezarn had been a main suspect in the string of thefts and burglaries in the Birch Bay area. “We received information that he was involved and made a huge investigation out of it,” deputy Zac Reimer said. “When we went to his house to contact him, we found stolen property and were able to match it up with the burglaries.” Deputies recovered electronics, power tools, bikes and a firearm from Dezarn’s home on Leeside Drive.

Reimer said Dezarn was operating close to home, and that the majority of the burglaries were within half a mile of his house. “He made a real mess out of Birch Bay this summer,” Reimer said.

While Dezarn is in custody, Reimer believes more arrests are in the offing. “We’re continuing to follow up. In the meantime, it’s a good reminder for the public to keep stuff locked up overnight and report anything unusual to the sheriff’s office and deputies so we can continue to investigate promptly,” he said.

In addition to Dezarn’s arrest, the sheriff’s department previously arrested several local juvenile males in September 2012 for their involvement in some of the burglaries and thefts.
