The one thing that Needful Things needed more of was space.

The 1,100 square foot store was packed to the gills when Brenda Graves opened it in February, 2011, and with a constant stream of customers, both Americans and Canadians, in the past couple of years, it hasn’t taken the consignment store long to outgrow its retail space on the corner of Peace Portal and H Street.

Graves decided that the best option for her and her clientele was to move into a bigger store.

Luckily for her, she didn’t have to go far.

Needful Things relocated to the building just down the street this month and will celebrate with a grand opening on Saturday, November 17.

The new space, owned by Bruce and Sandy Wolf, is located next to Blaine Bouquets and is nearly four times the size of the old space. The two-story space was completely renovated and remodeled for the move. “It looks like a million dollars,” Bruce Wolf said.

Graves said it’s been a community effort to get the store back in order. “So many visitors to the store and consignors have volunteered their time and energy to assist in the move so I didn’t have to have professional movers come in,” Graves said. “From packing to shuttling things across the street and unpacking and setting up, it’s required quite a bit of effort, and they’ve been nonstop.”

The new store offers plenty of breathing room – a nice contrast to the old store’s tight quarters. “We were very cramped,” Graves said. “And when we emptied the building we were amazed at how much stuff we had!”

Graves carries a wide variety of both consignment goods and items from estate sales. “We have vintage jewelry, china and crystals and artwork and furniture,” she said. “I hope to have my man cave downstairs, too, which will incorporate hand tools, lawn tools and other things of interest to men and women.” It’s been a lot of fun and its great for the community.”

In the spring, once she’s settled in, Graves plans to take the store one step further and offer art classes in the space downstairs. “We’re hoping for a great holiday season and a great new year venture in this new location.”

Needful Things’ new location is 633 Peace Portal Drive, next to Blaine Bouquets.

The grand opening is Saturday, November 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Everything in the store will be 10 percent off in celebration of the move and Graves’ birthday. Hot apple cider, coffee and sweets will be served at the event.
